Byredo
A unique visual signature based on accords, character, and seasonality
A bright, almost bracing assault of juniper and bergamot crashes through with immediate clarity, whilst black pepper darts around the citrus notes like a restless wasp. Within moments, a resinous frankincense note emerges beneath, suggesting incense smoke curling through sunlit rooms.
Pine needle and iris crystallise the composition into something considerably drier and more contemplative, the iris lending a powdery, slightly soapy character that grounds the greenness. Frankincense deepens into the frame, developing a slightly leathery undertone that pulls the fragrance away from fresh territory into something more introspective and meditative.
Sandalwood and vanilla emerge with quiet insistence, the vanilla distinctly absent of sweetness—instead, it reads as creamy resin, blending seamlessly with the sandalwood's cool mineral quality. Amber adds the faintest warmth, but the composition remains decidedly restrained, fading to skin scent with a whisper of woody incense rather than a lingering embrace.
Gypsy Water arrives as a studied contradiction: a fragrance that promises nomadic freedom whilst delivering something far more architectural. Jérôme Epinette has constructed a scent that pivots on the tension between its green-sharp opening and a resolutely grounded base, never quite settling into either camp.
The juniper berry and bergamot create an almost gin-like clarity in the first moments, then pepper arrives to roughen the edges—this isn't the soft citrus of a summer cologne. Instead, it's austere, vaguely resinous. As the composition settles, pine needle and frankincense emerge with unexpected intensity, their dry, slightly medicinal character preventing any sweetness from taking hold. The iris contributes a powdery, almost dusted quality that keeps the heart phase tense and slightly austere rather than cuddly.
