A unique visual signature based on accords, character, and seasonality
The first minutes explode with ginger's bright, almost citric burn before nutmeg's warmer spice takes hold, creating an almost culinary intensity. Bulgarian rose emerges tentatively beneath this spice-forward assault, its damascene sweetness immediately overwhelmed by the patchouli's dark, fermented character bleeding through.
By the second hour, the fragrance settles into something contemplative—the frankincense and cypriol establish a cool, slightly smoky dryness whilst the oud deepens the woody core without dominating it. The rose has largely retreated, replaced by an aromatic, almost herbal resiniousness that suggests temple incense more than conventional perfumery.
The final hours belong entirely to the base—vetiver's peppery earthiness merges with benzoin's vanillic warmth and cistus's dusty, mineral quality. Labdanum adds a honeyed undertone that prevents the composition from becoming purely austere, though the overall effect remains distinctly animalic and skin-like, clinging close rather than projecting.
Volcano is a fragrance that arrives with the confidence of something genuinely difficult to wear—a tumultuous blend of spice, resin, and animalic depth that rewards those willing to sit with its contradictions. Jordi Fernández has crafted something closer to a perfumed incense installation than a conventional scent, one where the Bulgarian rose doesn't soften so much as struggle against a phalanx of spices and woody resins.
The opening salvo is assertive: Indonesian nutmeg and Laotian red ginger create an almost medicinal prickliness, whilst the rose tries to establish floral credibility before being engulfed by patchouli and frankincense. This isn't delicate floristry. The heart reveals itself as genuinely resinous—the Somalian frankincense pairs with Indian cypriol to create an almost ecclesiastical dryness, the kind of scent-memory associated with temple smoke and aged wood. The oud doesn't announce itself ostentatiously; instead, it seems to intensify the woody backbone, lending it a slightly creaky, aged quality.
