A unique visual signature based on accords, character, and seasonality
Bergamot and lemon arrive with a clean, almost soapy brightness that feels purposeful rather than effusive. There's a subtle bitterness in the citrus oils that hints at the aromatic complexity waiting beneath, a brief moment of clarity before the composition deepens.
Lavender emerges first, its herbal sharpness almost surgical, before jasmine weaves through with that characteristic sweet-animalic warmth that stops the scent from becoming too austere. Rosemary adds a green, slightly resinous edge that makes the whole heart phase feel alive and three-dimensional, constantly shifting between the herbal and the floral.
The woods take over with sandalwood's milky sweetness providing the foundation, whilst cedarwood and patchouli create a dry, slightly earthy cocoon around it. What remains is soft, skin-close, and decidedly refined—the florals now just a memory, leaving behind a woody sweetness that feels both comforting and unobtrusive.
Hartley is Mazzolari's meditation on the fougère structure, but one that's been tilted decidedly into floral territory with surprising grace. The marriage of lavender and jasmine in the heart creates a fascinating tension—the herbal, almost medicinal edge of lavender softened by jasmine's indolic sweetness, whilst rosemary adds a green, camphorous lift that prevents the composition from becoming too overtly pretty. This isn't your grandfather's barbershop fougère; it's something more ambiguous, more quietly contemporary.
The citrus opening, bergamot and lemon working in tandem, provides just enough brightness to usher you into that complex floral-aromatic heart without overstaying its welcome. What makes Hartley particularly compelling is how the woody base—sandalwood's creamy lactonic quality mingling with cedarwood's pencil-shaving dryness and patchouli's earthy sweetness—never overwhelms the florals above. Instead, there's a constant dialogue between the herbal-floral aromatics and the woods beneath, creating a scent that feels both classic and slightly unconventional.
