Rammstein
A unique visual signature based on accords, character, and seasonality
Myrrh and frankincense collide with saffron in a golden-brown haze that's immediately sharp and intoxicating, less church and more opium den. The smoke accord arrives within seconds, dense and asphyxiating, coating everything in a resinous, medicinal fog that borders on overwhelming.
Prunol emerges as an unexpected dark sweetness, fermenting beneath the smoke like overripe fruit in a distillery, whilst the styrax adds balsamic depth that prevents the composition from becoming one-dimensional char. The smoked tea adds astringency, a burnt, tannic edge that keeps the sweetness in check and amplifies the leather accord developing beneath.
Birch tar takes command, rubbery and intense, melding with resins that have turned amber-thick and almost fossilised on the skin. The tobacco lingers as dry leaf and ash rather than smoke, a ghost of combustion long past, whilst the woody backbone provides just enough structure to prevent complete olfactory chaos.
Kokain Black Intense is theatrical brutality in a bottle—a smoke-choked cathedral where incense meets industrial grime. Alexandre Illan has crafted something deliberately confrontational here, opening with the ecclesiastical weight of myrrh and frankincense, but immediately corrupted by saffron's leathery, medicinal edge. This isn't the serene spirituality of traditional incense fragrances; it's the smell of ceremonies held in abandoned factories, where sacred resins burn alongside rubber and tar.
The heart reveals Illan's clever hand with the prunol—that fermented, boozy plum molecule—which adds an unexpected gourmand darkness, like fruit rotting in brandy casks while styrax oozes its balsamic sweetness through the smoke. The smoked tea brings a tannic, charred quality that reinforces rather than softens the composition's aggressive character. It's Lapsang Souchong steeped until bitter, drunk in the back room of a leather workshop.
