Shay & Blue
A unique visual signature based on accords, character, and seasonality
Cyclamen arrives with sharp, almost peppery brightness, immediately joined by the cool, green whisper of snowdrop that catches you slightly off-guard. It's crisp and faintly bitter—closer to a winter garden than a perfume counter—before the plum begins its deep, shadowy creep beneath.
The black tulip emerges as the leading voice, revealing spiced, earthy floral character that sits surprisingly close to the skin. Plum deepens into something almost brandy-like whilst the white chocolate base begins its subtle, creamy infiltration, softening the florals' initial austerity without compromising their distinctive personality.
What remains is a skin scent of predominantly woody, chocolatey warmth—the floral and fruity elements now background voices to a softly sweet, nearly musky finish. The woods provide a muted earthiness that feels both comforting and slightly resinous, creating an intimate second skin rather than a lasting projection.
Black Tulip presents itself as a fragrance of subtle contradictions—a dark floral that never quite surrenders to shadow. Julie Massé has constructed something genuinely intriguing here: the plum and cyclamen create an almost bruised quality, as though you're smelling fruit at the precise moment it begins to ferment, whilst the snowdrop provides a crisp, almost bitter counterpoint that prevents the composition from becoming cloying.
What distinguishes Black Tulip is the white chocolate base, which doesn't announce itself as gourmand sweetness but rather as a creamy, slightly savoury undertone that grounds the florals. The black tulip accord itself—an earthy, slightly spicy floral—sits at the composition's heart with genuine presence, neither precious nor overwrought. There's a whisper of wood threading through, adding structure and preventing the sweetness from dominating entirely.
