The first spray delivers a syrupy avalanche of lilac and cherry, undercut by tart apple and the peculiar vegetal coolness of violet leaf. It's intensely sweet yet strangely fresh, like crushing flower petals and fruit together in your palm, the greenness preventing total olfactory overload.
Honey becomes the dominant force, viscous and golden, melding with honeysuckle and ylang ylang into something genuinely sticky-sweet but never quite cloying. The florals soften and blur together—mimosa, peony, tulip—creating a powdery, pillowy cloud that hovers between retro and contemporary.
What remains is a gentle murmur of creamy woods and coumarin, the sweetness now tempered and skin-like, with traces of amber warmth and the faintest whisper of moss. The fruits have vanished, leaving only the memory of nectar and a soft, almost talc-like floralcy that clings close.
Shelley Waddington's Hummingbird is a nectar-drunk fantasy that captures the frenetic sweetness of hovering amongst spring blooms. The opening is a near-overwhelming cascade of orchard fruits and pastel florals—lilac and lily of the valley intertwine with crisp apple and cherry, creating that peculiar syrupy-fresh quality of a garden in full, almost vulgar bloom. This isn't a polite floral; it's exuberant to the point of dizzying, with violet leaf lending a cucumber-like greenness that prevents the composition from tumbling into pure confection.
As it settles, the honey accord becomes the sticky heart of the matter, working with honeysuckle and ylang ylang to create something genuinely nectarous—thick, golden, and faintly indolic. There's a playfulness here, a deliberate excess that recalls vintage powdery florals but updated with modern fruity clarity. The mimosa adds a dewy, almost aqueous quality, whilst peony and tulip (surely more suggestive than literal) contribute soft, pillowy floralcy. The coumarin and amber base eventually introduces a slightly powdered, creamy warmth that tames the sugar rush, though the wood notes remain politely blonde and unobtrusive.
